Having read all the reviews of this book, I have to say I am appalled at the negative comments. It seems evident to me that the negative comments were made by people who didn't really read the book, and it makes me see red when people criticize such gentle people. For the record, I have known Jack and Barbara Willke for 40 years. She is now with the Lord, but he is still very much with us. Neither has/had a mean bone in his or her body. If there is anything I hate worse than defamation, I'm not sure what it would be.
This book is chock full of information on the abortion issue. It is heavily documented from medical papers and other valid sources. It shows that abortion is based on a lie, and that it hurts women and their future children. I can't think of a better single resource for anyone interested in the issue who has an open mind, or who desires to protect both mothers and babies. Abortion isn't just a violent attack on a baby. It is also a violent attack on the baby's mother.
A couple of snide remarks were made about the Willkes' discussion of rape. They show why it is unlikely there is a large number of pregnancies as a result of rape. They work the numbers. While I personally believe rape pregnancy is more prevalent than that, I definitely think the figures have often been inflated for political reasons. One reason I think the number may be higher is because I personally know three women who became pregnant from rape. In spite of what sociologists say about everyone knowing someone who knows someone who knows everyone else in the country, personally knowing three women does seem a bit unusual. The thing that makes me more angry is the fact that people aren't bothering to ASK rape victims what they really want, before using these unfortunate people for their own personal agenda. Both the Willkes and David Reardon have shown that the vast majority of women who become pregnant from rape avoid abortion in spite of heavy societal pressure. Dr. Reardon says 72% refuse abortion. Remember, not every woman who is raped even ever wants an abortion. Dr. Reardon edited a book called Victims and Victors. I highly recommend it. Rape victims fare better if they do not abort, as difficult as that decision may seem. Of the three I know, two kept their babies and parented. The other had an abortion. The two have done splendidly; one of them says of her eight children, she is closest to the one conceived from rape. The one who had an abortion was in and out of mental hospitals for at least a decade that I know about. Apparently the abortion made her unable to have children as well. Ultimately the situation destroyed her marriage, and it is unlikely she will ever be able to live in such a close relationship with anyone.
The legal exception for rape is so large you can drive a Mack truck through it. I talked to a woman who told me that in Cleveland, free abortions were given to women who claimed to be rape victims. They finally had to ask for documentation (police report) before doing this because so many women claimed to have been raped. In fact, if women would just REPORT their rapes, they could receive immediate treatment that would often stop them from getting pregnant in the first place, if they were fertile. This type of treatment was freely available well before Roe v. Wade. The fact is, no abortion ever prevented a single rape. It is a good way to hide evidence, though, so that the criminal escapes punishment. I teach martial arts. My self defense instructor told us that 72% of the UNTRAINED women who fight back escape unharmed. A few simple rules of awareness help tremendously, and learning some self defense skills likewise. I advise every woman who can, to train to the black belt level in a martial art. It simply teaches us how not to be victims, to act confident so that we don't seem weak to the cowards who rape.
Obviously, out of the many chapters in this book, only one is about rape. Other chapters discuss prenatal development, methods of abortion, and many other facets of this topic. The title is an excellent description of the attitude of the authors, and this permeates the book. The Willkes were really founders of the pro-life movement, and along with other efforts, had a very big hand in making resources available to women so they had a genuine choice. All I can say is that when it comes to "choice", the side favoring abortion rarely offers more than one choice, so they really don't have any gripes coming. The other side offers three: parenting, adoption, and keeping oneself safe (if you don't have sex, you can't get pregnant). At the very least, women deserve to be honored and cherished, not used as sex toys. Telling the truth about all the aspects of abortion is a giant step toward liberating us from this awful atrocity.
Keep in mind that abortion kills women far more often than people are aware. It leaves the rest wounded medically, emotionally, and spiritually. I can't think of a better way to enslave us, and the fraud of calling this a gift to women is too astronomical for the universe.
This book has a slightly clinical tone. Dr. Willke is a real MD, so that is not surprising. He is factual, and objective. But the gentleness of both authors is still evident, simply because there is no condemnation. The need for healing, and the fact that resources for healing are available, is also apparent.
I really wish they would reprint this book. It is full of so much important information. Even if it is never updated, it is still a fantastic resource and a classic work. If I had to choose just one book on the abortion issue to read and share, it would be this one.
