INTERNATIONAL LIFE CHAINS PROCLAIM RIGHT TO LIFE OF PRE-BORN BABIES

INTERNATIONAL LIFE CHAINS PROCLAIM RIGHT TO LIFE OF PRE-BORN BABIES

Global pro-abortionists proclaimed 3 October 2021 as an annual International Safe Abortion Day. In contrast to the 1 800 Life Chains held globally on, or near to 3 October, pro-abortionists could only muster a handful of protests. Up to a million Christians worldwide took part in the various Life Chains on the first weekend of this October, International Life Chain Sunday.

National Alliance for Life
The NAL (National Alliance for Life) is an affiliation of pro-life churches and organisations, formed in 1995. On Saturday, 2 October, international pro-life speakers and activists met together online for the International Virtual Pro-life Summit via Zoom. A Stand for Life, organised by the National Alliance for Life, took place in Durban, Kwazulu Natal. To view the presentation by Dr Peter Hammond to the NAL conference click here.

Life Chain in Cape Town
About 120 Christians formed a Life Chain to proclaim the sanctity of life in Cape Town on Sunday. The Life Chain in Cape Town took place on the centre island of Buitengracht Street (near the entrance to the Waterfront). Other Life Chains took place in Kempton Park, Gauteng and Durban. The Life Chain is an international prayer rally and peaceful placard demonstration against the abortion holocaust.

Abortion in South Africa
The Christian Action Network estimates the number of babies killed by legal abortions since 1997 to be well over 1 800 000. We believe that the number of legal abortions is far higher than the official amount - due to outstanding statistics from some provinces in previous years and a possible failure of some hospital officials to accurately record abortions in state hospitals.

At the National Alliance for Life Conference held in Durban on Saturday. 2 October, Advocate Keith Mathee reported that the death toll from abortion in South Africa since 1997 is actually over three million. He also reported a staggering 280 000 abortions have been performed in South Africa since lockdaown began on 26 March 2020. Even as the ANC government closed churches, abortion clinics were declared "essential services" and remained open.

Illegal Abortions
In addition, Illegal abortionists operate with impunity in virtually every city and town in South Africa - due to the failure of police and city officials to investigate or make any arrests. Last Thursday, the regional court in East London has handed a five-year jail sentence to a man bust for illegally selling abortion pills. (report in Sowetan Live, 1 October 2021)

The Christian Action Network urges pro-lifers to lay charges against illegal abortionists at their local police station. A form detailing how illegal abortions violate both the Termination of Pregnancy Act and Medicines Act has been drafted for this purpose and can be downloaded here.

Adoption - Loving Option
“Pro-life groups uphold the sanctity of life – that every life is valuable to God. Over 70 Crisis Pregnancy Centres, Mothers Homes and Baby Homes across South Africa provide women with loving alternatives and practical support, not just one choice – abortion – that pro-abortionists coerce women into choosing. Doctors for Life and many other Christian groups care for many hundreds of orphans.” – Dr Peter Hammond, Director of Christian Action Network.

Evangelistic Outreach
Since 1987 Life Chains have been held in the USA, and since 1992 Africa Christian Action has organised Life Chains in South Africa. This was the 29th Life Chain held in Cape Town. On the first Sunday in October, we always organise the annual Life Chain in Cape Town. We use these opportunities to distribute thousands of Gospel booklets and evangelistic tracts to passing motorists and pedestrians. Many evangelistic conversations come about through these outreaches. Sometimes passing news crews have come and conducted interviews with our people. This gives even more opportunities for evangelistic witnessing and applying the Lordship of Christ to all areas of life.

Harassment and Interference
Despite our 30 years track record of peaceful pro-life protests in Cape Town, we were besieged by hordes of Metro police, traffic police and SAPS! They forbade us to distribute literature at the traffic lights, despite the fact that many beggars, advertisers and hawkers are busy in intersections at many traffic lights around Cape Town, most of the time. The traffic department decided to choose this day to clamp down on our Life Chain. We were harassed and threatened. It was inexplicable and unprecedented. The kind of people we have turning out at the Life Chains are ministers, missionaries, mothers, families and law-abiding people.

As we told them, we have never thrown a stone, broken any windows, not even left any litter behind! Our Life Chains are always peaceful and positive. In fact we had some of our people with plastic gloves and black plastic bags picking up litter in order to leave the place better than we found it!

Nevertheless, a traffic officer, J. Brand, instructed our literature distributers to cease and desist. He also tried to have our banners removed from the pedestrian walkway over Buitengracht St. We could have distributed thousands more leaflets with the excellent team of volunteers we had, had it not been for this traffic officer’s harassment and interference.

Nevertheless, we had a good group. Over 2700 leaflets and Gospel booklets were distributed before the traffic officer began to order our people to stop. The programme was good and the weather was excellent, with no wind and no rain, which in Cape Town is not to be taken for granted.
